Japan's Nuclear Refugees

In June, Naional Geographic sent AP photographer David Guttenfelder into the exclusion zone around the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Station, which was badly damaged in the earthquake and tsunami earlier this year. He captured images of what they left behind..

Scenes From Japans Devastated Nuclear Plant

On November 12, the grounds of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were opened to a small group of media for the first time since March, when the earthquake and tsunami triggered explosions and the reactors melted down. David Guttenfelder visited the nuclear power plant itself and witnessed a striking scene of devastation: twisted and overturned vehicles, crumbling reactor buildings, piles of rubble virtually untouched since the wave struck more than eight months earlier.

The North Iwaki Reconstruct & Develop Project Team

We are going to send 100% of the proceeds collected from Our event on Nov 4, 2011 to the North Iwaki Reconstruct & Develop Project Team.

The North Iwaki Reconstruct & Develop Project Team is a volunteer group formed by the Northern Iwaki, Fukushima locals to reconstruct and develop the community. Northern Iwaki is having a very difficult time cleaning up the area. It was an evacuated area after the earthquake & tsunami since it is only 20miles away from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant. They are still under the great fear of radiation but they are staying strong for their home town!!

After the earth shook and the tsunami swept, what remains?
One month has passed since the The Great East Japan earthquake.
Gray landscapes of rubble and ruin stream past the car window?

A cineaste is driving to the stricken area with a doctor who came from Amagasaki. They meet with people there who calmly tell their tales. The camera and the microphone capture sketches of the landscape and the voices, here and there throughout the vast vista. The director is Koichi Omiya, who won the top prize of the Cultural Documentary Award from the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2010 for his film "Tadaima ~ Sorezore no Ibasho" (TADAIMA ～I'm home, a place for everyone).

The Sketch of Mujo is the first documentary film to be filmed and shown about the effects of the devastating earthquake and tsunami. The picture never identifies the locations or people, never reduces what happened to dry statistics. It simply projects onto the silver screen the aftermath of the unprecedented event, and showed the lives that go on. What does “reconstruction” mean? Where are we headed? Many questions arise in the darkness of the theater.

In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake and following Operation Tomodachi, U.S. Forces Japan have created a tribute video to the Japan Self Defense Forces who led disaster relief and humanitarian assistance operations. This video captures the heroic efforts of JSDF and their encouraging messages to the people of Japan. I hope that these messages reach as many people in Japan and in the world. Much Respect!!

Japan Against Nuclear Power

Tens of thousands of people marched in Tokyo on Monday in the biggest show of public opposition to nuclear power since the start of the Fukushima Daiichi crisis in March.

The protesters, who included residents of Fukushima prefecture, called for the immediate closure of all of Japan's nuclear reactors and a new energy policy centred on renewables.

The protest on Monday was one of the biggest since the disaster: 60,000 strong, said the organizers; 20,000 said the police..

6 months later....

Last Sunday was the six-month anniversary of the day the massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeast coast.
Some 20,000 people are dead or missing. More than 800,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed. The disaster crippled businesses, roads and infrastructure. The Japanese Red Cross Society estimates that 400,000 people were displaced...
These sets of photo show right after the earthquake and tsunami hit, then three months later and finally, how the scene looks now. Much of the debris has been cleared away or at least organized into big piles, that's it... it's a long way to go... Much respect to all the people working so hard to help rebuilding the areas!!

９月１１日で地震＆津波から半年が経ちました。東北地方では２万人以上が死亡もしくは未だ行方不明、８０万世帯が崩壊多くの地域は壊滅状態で４０万人以上の方々が住み慣れた町から避難を余儀なくされています。そんな状況の中多くの方々が今も色々な形で一早い復興を目指し日々頑張っていらっしゃいます。マッチリスペクト！！！！

”第2原発から25キロ程の久之浜に有る諏訪神社に行き震災後半年経った町を案内して貰いました。津波の威力がこんなにも町を変えてしまうのかと思い驚愕!!テレビなどで見るのと実際行くのとではそれまで解らないその町の暮らしぶりなど心に刺さります、地震津波だけでもこれほどの被害が出ていると言うのにこの国の対応は最低です、コレに加え原発事故で見えない危険がそこら中に有るんです、東京の家の玄関を出て一歩足を踏み出したそのアスファルトの先にこの現実が繋がってます、空を見上げれば同じ空の下にみんな暮らして居ると言う事を忘れてはいけないと思った。。。” -YSK

This is Marr-Hakase and Komura-sensei, friends of Deadly Dragon Sound, with a report from the relief front in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

Deadly Dragon Soundの友だち、マール博士と小村先生がボランティア体験を元に宮城県石巻市の現状レポートを皆さんにお送りします。



Ishinomaki is one of the coastal cities hardest hit by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami (3,128 dead, 2,700 missing, 4,847 in emergency shelters). We had the opportunity to visit and volunteer there this week, exactly 4 months after the dual disasters. Here is how the city looked from a nearby mountain and a drive through town on July 11, 2011.

石巻市は3月11日の東日本大震災で最も被害の大きかった沿岸地域の一つです（死者3,128名、行方不明者2,700名、避難者4,847名）。私達が石巻に到着したのが偶然にも東日本大震災が起こって丁度4ヶ月目の日でした。以下が近くの山で、そして車で移動中に撮った4ヶ月経過した石巻市近辺の現在の様子です。震災後様々なメディアが石巻の様子を撮っていたのもこの山からです。丁度山の下にあった小学校が3日間燃え続けていたのをテレビで見た方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。



We went up for two days of volunteering with Peace Boat Japan. Our group was assigned to a private home about 200-300 meters from the ocean. A couple in their 60s lived in a two story house with their elderly and frail mother who was in diapers. When the quake hit, Mrs. M was at home with the mother, three dogs, and a cat. A few days earlier there had been a quake and a very loud tsunami warning but a tsunami never came. This time, the warning wasn’t as audible and they didn’t rush given the previous false alarm. Since it was cold, Mrs. M was putting clothes on the dogs and getting ready to flee, but soon realized it was too late when the water began encroaching. This ended up saving their lives since they were able to seek refuge on the second floor instead of running outside and being swept up by the tsunami. Here, Mrs. M tells us about the horrifying experience as we eat shaved ice that she bought for us during one of our breaks.

私達は2泊3日でピースボートが行なっている短期ボランティアに参加しました。海岸から200~300メートル程離れた個人宅の泥まみれになった所持品をすべて洗い落とすというのが私達のグループに課せられた作業でした。このお宅は2階建てで60代のご夫婦と寝たきりのお母さんが住んでいらっしゃいました。震災の日、M夫人は寝たきりのお母さんと3匹の犬と1匹の猫と家にいました。震災の2日前にも地震があり、その時には街中に津波警報が流れましたが津波は来ませんでした。3月11日に起きた津波の時にも津波警報が街中に流れましたが、それはよく聞き取れるものではなく、また、2日前に何も起こらなかったという経験から、人々はあせることがありませんでした。その日は寒い日だったので警報が発令された時、M夫人は犬に服を着せ逃げる準備をしていました。しかし、すぐに逃げるには遅すぎたことに気が付いたのです。今までにはきいた事のない音の後、すぐにボールペンでためし書きをするようなぐるぐるとした波がすぐそこに迫ってきていたのです。しかし外に逃げ遅れたことが最終的にはM夫人の命を救ったのです。なぜなら、M夫人は外に逃げて波に飲み込まれてしまう事なく、自分の家の２階に逃げ込むことができたからなのです。以下の話は私達が作業の合間にM夫人からの差し入れのカキ氷を食べながらきいたM夫人の貴重で悲惨な経験です。



The tsunami swept up cars into the trees around her house and filled her first floor entirely with black sludge. A few neighbors were able to swim up to 100 meters to her second floor, despite never swimming before. They pulled some in with rope and the walls were stained with blood from rope burns. They gave emergency aid to one elderly neighbor, but she ended up passing away on the spot. It took her husband, who was away at work at the time of the tsunami, 2 weeks to make it back to the house. Mrs. M and their mother ended up staying 2 weeks on the second floor before being able to move into a friend’s house about a 30 minute drive away. Her mother and dogs survived and are still with her, but her cat somehow made it to the second floor only to pass away.

津波により数台の車が彼女の家の周りの木々に引っかかったり、M夫人の家の1階部分がすべて水に浸かってしまいました。近所の人数人は普段は泳げないにも関わらず、100メートル先にある彼女の家の2階部分まで泳ぎ着いて来ました。M夫人以下その場にいた人で家に泳ぎ着いた人達をロープで引っ張り助けましたが、壁にはロープを引っ張った際に切れて出た血がそこら中に付きました。近所の人の一人はロープで引っ張っぱった時には脈がなく、人工呼吸などを施しましたが、その場で死亡が確認されました。M夫人のご主人はその時仕事に行っており不在でしたが、2週間後にやっと家に戻ることができたのです。結局M夫人は自宅の2階で2週間過ごすことになり、それ以後はそこから30分程離れた友人の家を借りて生活しているそうです。寝たきりのお母さんと犬3匹はM夫婦と今も一緒に元気に生活しているのですが、猫は震災後死んでしまったそうです。

この写真は保険請求の際に提示する目的で取った物で、M夫人の自宅1階の水がはけた後自衛隊が瓦礫を撤去しに来た時に撮った写真です。



Despite the trauma, Mrs. M was an incredibly bright person, with a warm laugh. She was told that it would cost over $130,000 to fix her house, so they plan to look into renting a new space. Our task was wash the mud and runoff from their belongings so they could take them and try to start a new beginning elsewhere. Here is footage from one of our bike rides to her home that gives an idea of the extent of damage in that part of town.

こんなひどい津波の被害を受けたにも関わらず、M夫人は明るく笑顔を絶やしませんでした。M夫人によると、被害を受けた部分を直すのに一千万円ほどかかるので、この家に戻るつもりはなく、新たに新しい家を購入予定であるとおっしゃっていました。私達の仕事はM夫妻の所持品に付いた泥を洗い流す事で、そのきれいになった所持品は新たな家へ持って行くとのことでした。以下のビデオは私達が自転車で彼女の家へ行く途中に撮影したもので、このあたりの被害の様子が伺えると思います。



We hardly had time to take photos of our work, but here is one shot of our washing operation.

作業中は写真を撮ることがなかなかできなかったのですが、これが私達がしていた泥洗いの作業風景です。



The work was hard given the over 90 degree heat and humidity, but was made much easier by periodic breaks and snacks and stories provided by Mrs. M! Also, the work was nothing compared to the harsh conditions of our accommodations. Peace Boat’s philosophy is to be located in the middle of the disaster area to empathize with the victims. But all of the trash and mud runoff in the area and the close proximity of port-a-potties brought a nasty stench and an unbelievable amount of flies.

作業は長袖長ズボンで30度を超える炎天下の中行なわれたのですが、頻繁に取った休憩やその合間のおやつ、そしてM夫人の話でそう辛く感じられませんでした。更に、私達の作業は宿泊場所の状況から比べられば何でもないことでした。ピースボートの哲学は被害者と同じ状況と状態の中で自分たちも生活するというものでした。しかし、周辺のごみやヘドロから臭う悪臭がひどく、数え切れないハエが発生していました。

またこの地域で多数の死者が出たこともあり、私達の宿泊場所で夜うめき声や不思議な音が聞こえたり、お化けを見たといった怪奇現状があったのは全く不思議なことではありませんでした。

Here, despite the efforts to quickly clean up gravesites given the cultural practice of paying tribute and taking care of the souls of deceased relatives, they had yet to be able to remove this car from a local cemetery.

この集団墓地はすでにきれいに掃除されていましたが、津波の時に流れて来た車はまだ撤去されずに無残な姿で残っていました。



As you can see, there is plenty work to be done in terms of aid and recovery in the Tohoku region. Despite the resilience of the people like Mrs. M and the hard work being put into the relief efforts, it will likely take years of effort to return cities like Ishinomaki to a semblance of normalcy.

こうして見てみると、東北の被災地は復興までにまだまだ多くの仕事が山積みになっています。M夫人のようなたくさんの方々の前向きな態度や様々な復興支援にも関わらず、石巻のような被災地が元の様子に戻るにはかなりの年月がかかりそうです。

Japan Tsunami Broke Off Icebergs in Antarctica

The tsunami that struck Japan on March 11 propagated waves that hit an ice shelf in Antarctica 8,100 miles away, smashing parts of it into huge icebergs. In total, the tsunami liberated about 48 square miles of icebergs from a region that had remained essentially unchanged for close to half a century. The largest berg measured about 5.9 miles by 4 miles, making it slightly bigger in surface area than Manhattan, and had a likely depth of about 260 feet.

東北地方太平洋沖地震の影響で13,000km離れた南極大陸の半世紀以上も変化の無かった77平方キロメートルにも及ぶ棚氷を巨大氷山に分裂していたのが 確認されたそうです。大きい物では 縦9.5km, 横6.5km、高さ80mとニューヨークのマンハッタンよりもでかい

66years ago, August 6, 1945 8;15am, "Little Boy" (An Atomic bomb using uranium-235) was dropped at Hiroshima, Japan. And 3days later "Fat Man" (an atomic bomb using plutonium-239) was dropped at Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 11:02am, These two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.
It's always that innocent people suffer the most... Please have a moment of silence in memory of people who died for the bombings and wish for world peace.

Operation Kodomotachi

We are going to send 100% of the proceeds collected from our upcoming event on July 17 (Sun) to Operation Kodomotachi(Operation Children). It is a non-profit group that was formed right after the Japan Earthquake & Tsunami by musicians, artists, designers, actors and many creative people concerned with what the future generations are facing right now. They are working hard to help children in the areas that may have high levels of radiation. One of the main projects they have been working on is providing housing in Hokaido for the victims.
Many areas in Tohoku (North East Japan) are in great danger of high radiation levels even outside of the authorities' evacuated area. Children can not choose what to do. Adults need to direct them on the right path towards safety. We need to be more aware of what is going on and more conscious about what could happen to the children from the radiation in the near future.
We are looking forward seeing you at the event!! Let's have good music and Good time for Good cause!!!

3 Months After...

Japan continues to deal with the enormous task of cleaning up and moving forward three months after the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeast coast. I know we don't hear about it much anymore... Japan is also dealing with the damaged Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant which is causing possible great danger of radiation affects as well, and now the rainy season, which could increase the risk of disease as workers clear away the debris, is approaching... Please be careful!! Big up to all the people working so hard to help rebuilding the areas!! It's a long way to go...

地震＆津波から３ヶ月が経ちました。。海外ではもうニュースにもなりませんし、多くの人たちの記憶からも遠のいてきている様にも感じます。東北地方では原発問題の心配が毎日の様に報じられている中、地方自治体、自衛隊、多くのボランティアの方々そして被災した現地の方々は日々復興に向けて頑張っていらっしゃいます。梅雨にはいると衛生面、放射能物質の降下付着等色々と問題も増えてきますが、くれぐれも自身の身にお気をつけて活動してください！ 道のりは長いです。。

The authority has released the updated number of deaths and those missing from the Japan Earthquake & Tsunami on May, 4th. Now Death toll is 14,785. Missing is 10,271, Total 25,056.

Miyagi prefecture - Dead: 8,873 / Missing: 6,100
Iwate prefecture - Dead: 4,335 / Missing: 3,306
Fukushima prefecture - Dead: 1,513 / Missing: 861

Including the evacuations for nuclear plant's crisis, there is over 124,000 people that are still staying at about 2,400 camps through out Japan. There are tons more who have evacuated individually or still in the evacuated areas having a difficult and unsafe time right now.
